Email purge (yay!) but Microsoft Outlook blows (boo!)

August 22, 2014

Iemail_cleanse return to my office following a week off on holiday to discover Outlook no longer functions. The Microsoft Exchange online Outlook web access works fine, but the local install on my PC refuses to connect, incessantly prompting for a password. The problem is not machine-specific either, since the identical sympton occurs on 3 different PCs. After spending ten days troubleshooting with Microsoft tech support (who to their credit were consistently pleasant but as stymied as I was in resolving the issue), I’m throwing in the sponge, as we say in France.

Farewell Microsoft Outlook 2007. I’ve bitten the bullet and succumbed to the highway robbery of purchasing Office 2010. The upgrade process was of course anything but seamless, and proved a fantastic time sink for mid-August. In the process, I’ve lost everything that had not been archived in July, which is mainly my InBox of some 700~900 messages.

It is true that I’m a fan of a periodic email cleanse, so the sight of clean InBox is totally zen. However, this also means that if you never heard back from me, your message was probably lost. I apologize for the inconvenience and invite you to contact me again if needed.

I moved to another email client 2 years ago after many years using outlook. Just to get rid of this kind of issue, when nobody could understand what is going on. During the transition period, I kept open both email clients. The old one to see the old stuff. And the new one to receive and send new emails. After few months, it was not necessary to keep open the old client. But, most of my clients still use outlook and I feel the pain to help and solve their problems !
