VC’s beat entrepreneurs: Barça victorious

February 18, 2010

To suggest that the performance by 11 VC’s posing as wanna-be athletes wearing Barça jerseys Tuesday night on the field of FC Barça’s ‘mini estadi’ somehow compares to the actual professional football club would be borderline sacrilegious in this cathedral of football.

But, like FC Barcelona has done countless times over the ages, on Tuesday night the VC’s emerged victorious. Our formidable foes in the 6-5 nail-biter were a collection of entrepreneurs from portfolio companies of Nauta Capital.

However sweet as it was, this victory represented the lucky exception that proves the rule. Consistently in previous years, the entrepreneurs always win. Why is that? I submit that the explanations might underscore the distinctions between VC’s and entrepreneurs in their very DNA.

Here are my theories, based of course on gross generalizations and politically incorrect assumptions:

  1. Good entrepreneurs are generally younger than good VC’s.
  2. Entrepreneurs are naturally more competitive than VC’s.
  3. Entrepreneurs seem naturally more inclined to play as a team, to appreciate the importance of each diverse role on the field. VC’s on the other hand, all want to score the winning goal. Defense is for mezzanine lenders…
  4. VC’s are slowed by the accumulated toll of several hedonistic culinary experiences (LP lunches, closing dinners), whereas entrepreneurs generally only indulge in 1 or maximum 2 closing dinners during the life of their venture.
  5. And one final theory postulated by another player: Entrepreneurs play to win, whereas VC’s play to not lose.

A special acknowledgement to the opponents, who played a solid and very sportsmanlike match. And a special thanks to the sponsor and coordinator of the event, Nauta Capital, a group of investors that, just like FC Barcelona, are true champions in their league.
